Ingrown toenail surgery. A simple solution to a painful problem

Ingrown toenails are a common problem, affecting people of all ages.

They are a characterised by pain along the edge of the toenail in the groove that the nail edge sits (the sulcus), often accompanied by an infection of the soft tissues around the nail. In rare instances, they can lead to serious infections, that can even affect the bones in the toe and lead to long term use of antibiotics. Commonly the nail has some degree of deformity in it, usually related to an old injury or a congenital problem, and this is the basis for ongoing and recurrent pain and infections.

Treatment

Ingrown Toenail For chronic recurrent ingrown toenails, the best long term solution is a partial nail excision, which is a minor surgical procedure performed painlessly under local anaesthetic; involving removal of the outside edge of the nail, along with the part of the nail where the nail grows from (the matrix).
Typically a strong chemical (phenol) is used to destroy the cells that grow the nail to prevent regrowth of the outside edge of nail. There is no need for a stay in hospital, as this can be performed safely and conveniently in the clinic, and there is usually minimal discomfort after the procedure. This particular procedure has been well researched, and proven to be the most effective treatment for ingrown toenails, with a low likelihood of recurrence.

If you think you have an ingrown toenail, feel free to consult with one of our podiatrists to discuss whether your condition is suitable for surgery.
