How often do I need to replace my orthotics?

Many new (and old) patient ask us this question. The answer is, of course, it depends…

The are many variables which affect the lifespan of orthotics. These include;

  • the materials the devices is made from
  • the condition we are treating
  • the activities or occupation of the patient
  • The body mass (BMI) of the patient
  • The design of the device (eg a larger bulkier device for sports shoes, vs a slim dress orthotic)

We send reminders to our patients at least every 12 months to review their orthotics, and to look for signs of material fatigue and loss of functionality of these devices. We usually expect the devices to last for at least 2-3 years, and often longer if well maintained.
